DAY 1 (JANUARY 1): THE BIGGEST CALENDAR SALE ON EARTH
Pegasus is like Grand Central Station on New Year's Day. The whole world needs calendars, especially at three for $10. Cheap art for the walls, everyone mutters as they paw through the piles. I make the annual trek too, and always buy at least one more than I actually need or can give away. — at Pegasus Bookstore.
DAY 2 (JANUARY 2): A BIT OF GREECE IN BERKELEY
My camera loves the Mediterranean feel of Northside's Nefeli cafe, and so do I. — at Nefeli Cafe.
DAY 3 (JANUARY 3): MARKET STREET AFTER DARK [iPod image]
They say it's getting dark later this month than last, but slowly, oh so slowly. I feel the night start rushing in at 4 o'clock, even though it's still light then. This was taken around 5:30. — at San Francisco.
DAY 4 (JANUARY 4): THE WAITING, THE ENDLESS WAITING [iPod image]
Dogs are so patient. And yet so eager. And always happy to see their owner, no matter how long we've kept them waiting. This one stands outside Whole Foods on 4th Street, my route to work. — at San Francisco SOMA.
DAY 5 (JANUARY 5): SELF-PORTRAIT WITH PASSERBY [iPod image]
Snapped this on my way to work after an endless dentist appointment to crown my royally cracked tooth. Almost three hours in the chair for that little tooth. Painless, however, and I passed the time with headphones on watching episode after episode of 30 Rock. — at San Francisco SOMA.
DAY 6 (JANUARY 6): IPAD 2-POWERED PRIUS [iPod image]
How quaint this will look someday, when we are on iPad 22,000 instead of iPad 2, or (more likely) iPads have become as outdated as Selectric typewriters. Apple either owns or perpetually rents the billboard (at Howard and First). It always shows the current or next big Apple thing. I'm thinking I'll keep an eye on it this year for picture-a-day purposes. Something that will obviously become dated will surely be interesting to look back on in years to come. The Prius cab will no doubt look equally quaint when I look back at this in my old age. — at San Francisco.
DAY 7 (JANUARY 7): MORNING COFFEE
Press-pot coffee is my favorite. I make it every day, even at work - there in a portable press pot from Peets. Today, in the morning light hitting the breakfast table, the ginormous shadows of my cup and pot suited my ginormous need for caffeine. Ahhhhhhh.
DAY 8 (JANUARY 8): EXUBERANT PRISCILLA (A DOG AND HER BOY #5)
She's showing her morning personality, except that it's early afternoon here. She's sending that generic dog message: Hello, hello, hello, hello, let's run and jump and sniff, what's wrong with you people? — at Berkeley.
DAY 9 (JANUARY 9): ME, AFTER A GOOD LUNCH WITH A GOOD FRIEND [iPod image]
My friend Paula was with me when I held up my iPod and took this picture. I showed it to her and said, see, it makes my face look heart-shaped, which it isn't, not at all, it's square. The camera lies, it really does. Photographs are not reality, but even today with all the PhotoShopping and such that goes on, people believe that it is, or at least that it can be. Sometimes people ask about one of my pictures, "Is that what it really looked like?" The answer has to be no, and therein lies the possibility for art, or at least deception. If pictures faithfully reproduced what the eye sees, photography wouldn't interest me. Of course, each pair of eyes sees a different reality, so maybe photographs are as real as any other sort of vision.
