DAY 28 (JANUARY 28): WATCHING POIROT [iPod image]
At the end of an uninspired day with no photos, I resort to taking a picture of a moving picture. Also experimenting with Instagram, the iPhone/iPod app. This uses one of the Instagram effects - "Nashville" I think.
DAY 29 (JAN 29): PRISCILLA'S FRECKLES AND FUR
Priscilla has quite an amazing coat. The ruffled part on the top half of her spine stands on end when she sees a squirrel or is pretend-fighting with other dogs. I guess those are her "hackles." Her fur may look rough but it's actually soft.
DAY 30 (JANUARY 30): TWEEDLEDUM & TWEEDLEDEE [iPod image]
I came upon these two on my walk to work. They happened to be waiting at the light. What's their story? — at San Francisco SOMA.
DAY 31 (JANUARY 31): STREEEEEEEEEEEHTCH LIMO [iPod image]
Took three photos of this rather long limousine as it rounded the corner and "stitched" them together to make an even longer one. — at San Francisco SOMA.
DAY 32 (FEBRUARY 1): SIAMESE STUDY [iPod image]
I had just parked near my chosen cafe for a work-in-East-Bay day when this velvety feline rubbed against my legs and then settled down to pose for pictures for among the leaves and tufts of grass. So many pictures of dogs in my collection...but I love cats too. Grew up with both. — at Berkeley.
DAY 33 (FEBRUARY 2): MADAME CHOU CHOU CHANDELIER
Flew to LAX today to visit old friends.Had dinner today with friend #1, Mary, who took me to Madame Chou Chou, a French restaurant on Main St. in Santa Monica. Yummy food, real French waiters, charming decor, both inside and on the intimate little patio. — at Santa Monica.
DAY 34 (FEBRUARY 3): SANTA MONICA SKATEBOARDER
Mary is about to sell her little forest green Alfa Romeo sports car after many beautiful years together. It's her baby (her words). We went outside to take some souvenir pictures of her and her Alfa before she left for work in the morning (you can see a bit of the car, left edge of the photo). I was standing in the street but had to step aside to let this skateboarder and his dog roll by. "Did you get her?" he yelled back at me after he passed (meaning, did I get his dog in the picture). Mary drove off and my friend Lisa picked me up. The highlight of the rest of the day was a visit to a women-only Korean bath house in a sketchy part of town. Because nakedness is mandatory, I was pretty sure a camera wouldn't be welcome. But it lives on in my memory and I'm determined to go back someday. Hot and cold pools, steam and sauna rooms, showers and a water trough for bathing, a high-tech Korean bidet, women laid out like slabs of meat to be scrubbed squeaky clean, and not a stitch of clothing to be seen in the "wet" area. Follow this exhausting activity by a nap on a warm tile floor in the relaxation area. All for $15 (actually the scrubbing costs extra, but you can scrub yourself instead, as I did). — at Santa Monica.
DAY 35 (FEBRUARY 4 ): MUSSO AND FRANK'S, "PROUDLY SERVING HOLLYWOOD SINCE 1919"
This evening's highlight: Dinner at this historic restaurant with Lisa and her husband. Musso and Franks was and is (apparently) a literary hangout. Great fun, great drinks, and good to great food. Similar to Sam's or Tadich's in San Francisco but with a Hollywood instead of an Old San Francisco twist. "F. Scott Fitzgerald was known to proofread his novels while sitting in a booth at Musso’s. Faulkner met his mistress of 20 years here, and was so chummy with the bartenders that he used to go behind the bar to mix his own mint juleps. Raymond Chandler wrote several chapters of 'The Big Sleep' while sipping drinks here." — with Lisa Donovan Lukas in Hollywood, California.
Day 36 (FEBRUARY 5): SKIPPY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SUNLIGHT
Skippy is just one of Lisa's three dogs, but he did sleep on the end of my bed so I felt a special connection. I hate it that we're in the midst of yet another drought, but the weather was spectacular in Los Angeles over the weekend. I would never move back to my hometown, but it's fun-fun-fun to visit. — with Lisa Donovan Lukas at Los Angeles.
